Sustainability

We try to produce as sustainably as possible to keep our footprint small. Therefore, our mailbox boxes are made of grass paper and tomato leaf pulp is the basic component of the seed bags. Printing is either made from paper that is 30-70% recycled paper or from paper that comes from agricultural waste.

Dahlia 'Café au Lait' knows almost everyone: its shape and color are unmatchable. Coffee-colored flowers as big as your head, we can't get tired of them. The plant gets really big and needs space, so space them a little further apart compared to smaller dahlia varieties.

Preliminary

Starting about the end of March, you can propagate dahlia bulbs indoors. This is optional, not necessary!

You put them in a pot with potting soil or garden soil with the stem facing up, just above the ground. Water when planting, but don't do this too often. Place them in a bright but not too warm spot.

Watch this video for more information on propagation.

Planting out

Transplanting dahlia tubers may be done starting in mid-May, when the chance of night frost is minimal.

Because tubers are hugely frost-prone, it is important to keep a close eye on the weather forecast to see if nighttime frosts are still expected.

Place the tubers so deep that their stems are just above the ground. Place the tubers about 50 centimeters apart.

Dahlias like rich soil, give some nitrogen-rich fertilizer such as vinassekali if necessary. Give plenty of water during dry periods.

Bloom

What is important is topping (or pinching) the young plants. This is allowed when the plant has four sets of leaves. You use sharp pruning shears to tip the plant back to two sets of leaves.

Dahlias are large plants in most cases. They carry many flowers, have hollow stems and catch a lot of wind, making them prone to falling over or snapping. Support for your dahlias is therefore necessary.

And keep cutting! The more you pick, the more will grow. Once the bud is as good as open, pick the flowers for the most pleasure in the vase. Always remove snapped or spent flowers, too.

To avoid losing your tubers at the end of the season, you can dig them up before the first night frost and let them overwinter. Judith explains how that works here.
