Did you know that there are many more varieties of zucchini than the standard green ones you find in the supermarket? 'Nimba' makes light green zucchini with dark stripes and spots. The plant first makes large yellow flowers, some of which are male and some of which are female. The female flower makes a zucchini, but you can pick the male flowers to eat, delicious!

Sow indoors
From April sow indoors in well-humid soil in a P9 pot. Sow 1 or 2 seeds per pot, push them in 2 cm and cover with a layer of soil or vermiculite. Place in a warm spot of about 20 degrees. Preferably do this indoors for a constant temperature. From mid-May you can harden off the seedlings and transplant outside in a sunny spot with a distance of 80 cm. Provide good fertile soil and harvest when the zucchini are about 10 - 15 cm long. This is a small variety, they just get thicker and less flavorful if you wait longer. Store outside the refrigerator in a dry, dark place.
Direct sowing
Sow directly into the ground from mid-May. Sow 2 seeds of which you keep the strongest. Also suitable for a large pot.

All vegetable seeds are annuals, meaning you have to re-sow them every year, except for hardy herbs. Rosemary, thyme, sage and fennel generally survive the winter just fine.

Vegetables generally like to grow in full sun. A minimum of 6 hours of sun in summer is a good guide. For annual flowers this is more, there we stick to a minimum of 8 hours of sun per day.

Storing seeds
Storing seeds
On the package of your seeds you will find the shelf life. You can use them until the date you see on it. An opened package is best stored in an airtight box in a cool and dark place, such as a closet in the hallway. Not sure if the germination is still good? Then it's best to buy a new pack.
