Questions about seeds, bulbs & tubers

Where do your seeds and bulbs come from?

Seeds are mainly produced in China, India, Central Africa, and South American countries such as Ecuador. Seeds are also grown in France and Eastern Europe. Our seeds come mainly from Africa, China, and Europe.

The organic and ecological varieties almost always come from the Netherlands. You will find a symbol of this on the packaging. Some seeds are required to have a plant passport, on this you will also always find the country of origin.

In the case of dahlias, flower bulbs and ranunculus, all the material comes from the Netherlands. There too we have both an organic and non-organic assortment.

Are the seeds and bulbs organic?

We have both organic and non-organic seeds, bulbs and tubers in our assortment. Therefore, non-organic varieties may still have pesticides used during production.

All of our seeds are not chemically treated and GMO-free. That means they are not genetically modified. In the case of seeds, many varieties are given a coating that allows them to be better preserved and germinate faster, but that is a chemical bath which in turn is bad for the soil.

Organic is always better - it's as simple as that. Flower seeds are just not yet available organically to a large extent, but we expect that to get better and better. The pesticides that may have been used are harmful to where our seeds are produced, to the people who work with them and to the nature around them. For this reason, more organic production must be increased.

The organic industry is supervised by the SKAL. We are registered and certified there under quantity 112721.

How many seeds are in a bag?

How many seeds are in a bag varies by species. We give an indication of quantity for each species on the product page. We deliberately work in smaller quantities to avoid having to throw seeds away. A bag with a thousand or even a hundred seeds you generally don't need in your own garden.

Are there few seeds in the package? Then you have an expensive variety on your hands. To prevent the price from becoming very high, we put fewer of them in a bag. It is always special to see that from each miniscule seed a complete plant grows. So don't underestimate what's in a bag.

How long can I store my seeds?

On the packaging is a best-before date, until that date we guarantee good germination provided you store them properly: airtight, dark, cool. Fresh seeds germinate better, therefore it is best to sow them directly the first season after you buy them.

Who made the packaging?

The illustrations on our packaging are by artist Maartje van den Noort. We further designed the packaging ourselves and it was printed and filled by a fantastic company in the north of North Holland. The packaging of our seeds consists of 20% tomato pulp derived from garden waste from greenhouses in the Westland region. The fiber paper is made from 80% cellulose (wood) sourced from the Ardennes in Belgium, with an FSC label. The production uses 1400 solar panels that provide 25% of the energy needed for manufacturing. The packaging may be recycled in paper waste. All our seeds are packaged and filled in the Netherlands.

Will there be new supplies when something sells out?

For most seeds, dahlias and bulbs, we buy stock once. That means that on usually really means out, until the new season begins. All other products such as garden tools we replenish constantly. You can enter your e-mail address on the product page to be notified when something is back in stock. An out of stock issue of MAY & JUNE magazine is also really out of stock. We do not restock.

Moment when the seasons begin:

  • Flower and vegetable seeds: Oct. 1
  • Flower bulbs: May 15
  • Dahlias Jan. 1

When do I plant my dahlias?

Dahlias may be planted in the ground starting in mid-May. Before then, you can pull the tubers forward. You can read more instructions on growing dahlias here.

When do I plant my bulbs?

Flower bulbs are planted between October and December. They need a period of cold to develop properly.

Questions about border packages & facade gardens

How do the border packages work?

The border packages are ready-made packages including perennials as well as a planting plan and instruction booklet to make it easy to create a beautiful border. You order the border packages as a pre-order, because we deliver everything at the same time.

You will receive the border packages together in one or more boxes. By mail you will also receive the necessary instructions to prepare the garden. In the package you will find instructions for planting.

Especially for city dwelling without a front garden, we also have each border package in a façade garden version. Here you can choose from three length formats of 1.50 meters, 3 meters or 5 meters. The depth is always 0.30 cm, the size of one wiped tile. Want a deeper facade garden? Then order two packages that you glue together.

How do I choose the right border package for my garden?

You choose a border package based on sun exposure and soil type. Don't know exactly what kind of soil you garden on? That's important to know so you pick the right border package. Take the soil quiz, and you'll immediately see the top 2, or readin this article what soil types there are and how to recognize them.

That's how you choose a border package that suits you:

Step 1: Select a border package based on your taste, and the sun exposure and soil type in your garden.

Step 2: Determine the size of the border you want to plant. You can choose from a border package for 3 m2, 5 m2 and 7 m2, or a facade garden of 1.50 m, 3 m or 5 m. With each border package you will receive two planting plans: for a rectangular border and an organic free-standing border. You can choose which one to use.

Step 3: Place your order by September 1, 2024. Then the pre-order closes and we will arrange for the plants to come to us from the grower. We will deliver all border packages to your home free of charge the week of Sept. 23.

With a border package you receive two drawings: one for a rectangular border, and one for an organic free-standing form. So you can choose which one fits best in your garden. Of course, you can move the layout around a bit. As long as you keep roughly the same proportions in the plan, there's not much you can do wrong. The facade gardens have one drawing.

When will my border package be delivered?

You will receive your plants in P9 pots. They are still small then, but will very quickly grow big in your garden. Depending on the season, they need about 3 - 6 months to do so. Your plants will be delivered free of charge in a sturdy box. You will also receive a drawing with planting instructions.

In 2024, we work in two rounds:

  • order until May 15, delivery the week of June 10.
  • order until Sept. 1, delivery the week of Sept. 23.

You will receive a track and trace code as soon as your package is on its way.

Are they organic plants?

The border packages consist 100% of perennials, these return every year. So you only have to plant them once. The plants are grown outdoors, with as few tools as possible. The use of pesticides cannot be 100% ruled out, which is why organic certification is not possible, but they are almost never used by our growers. Why? Because it is actually never necessary!

It's very different for nursery stock you buy at garden centers: there, the plants have to look perfect and visually appealing, making use of pesticides almost a necessity. That is not so for the plants in these border packages. These are allowed to have snapped or mottled leaves. What matters most are the roots in the pot. Do they look good? Then it is a healthy plant that will grow quickly in the garden. This is why pesticides are almost never used.

What sun position do I have?

To determine the sun exposure, divide the area where you want to plant the border package based on the quantity of hours of sunshine in the summer:

Shade: less than 4 hours of sunshine per day
Semi-shade: 4 to 6 hours of sunshine per day
Full sun: more than 6 hours of sunshine per day

What soil type do I have?

Roughly speaking, there are three types of soil: clay, peat and sand. Clay is heavy, malleable soil on which water remains. Peat is also a bit heavier, more acidic and allows water to pass through poorly. Sand is loose and dries out quickly. You can read more about them in this article.

In addition, it is important to know whether your soil dries up quickly or stays moist. That also matters in your choice.

Not sure what type of soil you have and what planting plan is right for your garden? Or do you need help figuring out a planting plan? Send us an email and we'll take a look with you.
